Linde introduced the Twin Radiant Cell concept for Pyrolysis furnaces in 1987 for both high capacity furnaces and furnaces with special tube bundle maintenance considerations. For large capacity furnaces this concept offers the advantage of very high capacities per furnace at a cost saving as each radiant cell is still of reasonable size. Similar high capacity in a conventional arrangement would result in a furnace length of more than 25 m, resulting in disadvantages in erection, operation and maintenance due to the length. The shorter overall furnace length translates to smaller cross sectional area of the convection section, which is a measure to increase the efficiency due to high gas velocities. The higher efficiencies contribute to less weight of the convection banks allowing the use of a lighter steel structure for the twin radiant arrangement compared to the conventional arrangement.
For several clients, a twin radiant cell arrangement resulted in a total furnace length of approximately 13 m, and Linde has designed these furnaces for complete removal of an individual convection tube bundle.
Another advantage offered by this concept is the operational flexibility with respect to feedstocks, since different feedstocks can be processed in each firebox at adequate cracking conditions without interference.
